When the Suitors go to bed Telemachus and Odysseus retrieve the weapons. Athene lights the room for them so they are able to see. Telemachus tells Eurycleia that they are storing the weapons so they don't get damaged. After they get rid of the weapons Telemachus goes to bed and Odysseus is joined by Penelope. She questions the visitor because she knows that he has met Odysseus. She asks him to describe her husband and he describes himself so perfectly that Penelope begins to cry. Then he tells the story about how he met Odysseus and came to Ithaca. He tells Penelope that Odysseus is alive and traveling the seas and will return in about a month. Penelope offers the begger a bed to sleep in but he chooses the floor. Although he does not want to he allows Eurycleia to wash his feet. As she washes his feet she notices a scar on Odysseus and realizes that it is him and hugs him but Odysseus keeps her quiet while Athene distracts Penelope so she doesn't find out it is him. Eurycleia promises to keep Odysseus' secret. Just before Odysseus is about to go to bed Penelope tells him about her dream. In the dream an eagle swoops down and kills her 20 geese. The eagle lands on her roof and in a human voice says that it is her husband who has killed her lovers. Penelope doesn't know what the dream means so Odysseus explains it to her. Penelope declares that she is going to pick the man who can shoot an arrow through the 12 axes set in a line to be her new husband.
